12. Important Manifestations of Worship – Patience

Sabr: Patience is another byproduct of Eeman

(Quran Chapter 3. Ali ‘Imran ayat 200)

O You who believe! Endure and be more patient (than your enemy), and Guard your territory by stationing army units permanently at the places from where the enemy can attack you, and fear Allaah, so that you may be successful.

(Quran Chapter 13. Ar Ra’d ayat 22-24)

22. And those who remain patient, seeking their Lord’s Countenance, perform As-Salaat (Iqaamat-as-Salaat), and spend out of that which we have bestowed on them, secretly and openly, and defend evil with good, for such there is a good end;

23. ‘Adn (Eden) Paradise (everlasting Gardens), which they shall enter and (also) those who acted righteously from among their fathers, and their wives, and their offspring. and angels shall enter unto them from Every gate (saying):

24. “Salaamun ‘Alaikum (peace be upon you) for that you persevered in patience! Excellent indeed is the final home!”

Three levels / types of patience:

1. Patience when something evil happens (Death in family, financial problems)

(Quran Chapter 31. Luqman ayat 17)

O My son! AqimisSalaat … and bear with patience whatever befall you…

2. Restrain yourself from committing sin. Angels congratulate those in Jannah “Salaamun Alaikum bimaa sabarthum”

3. Patience in constantly worshipping Allah. It may not be  easy to get up every day for Fajr, and continue other prayers including Isha

(Quran Chapter 19. Maryam ayat 65)

Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, so Worship Him (Alone) and be constant and patient in His worship

(Quran Chapter 20. Thaahaa ayat 132)

And enjoin As-Salaat (the prayer) on your family, and be patient in offering them…

Rewards of Sabr:

(Quran Chapter 3. Ali ‘Imran ayat 146)

… And Allaah loves As-Saabirin (the patient ones, etc.).

(Quran Chapter 8. Al Anfaal ayat 46)

… And be patient. Surely, Allaah is with those who are As-Saabirin (the patient ones, etc.).

(Quran Chapter 39. Az Zumar ayat 10)

…Only those who are patient shall receive their rewards in full, without reckoning.”

Q: Why is Sabr part of one’s Tawheed and Eeman?

A: Because showing anger at the decree of Allah is showing anger at Allah. All three types of situations (listed above) are decreed / commanded by Allah. Sabr doesn’t mean being happy with everything. It’s not humanly possible to be happy when a person’s mother or child dies

Example for Sabr: Prophet’s son Ibrahim died when he was 1.5 years old. Prophet was carrying him in his arms, and started to cry. The sahaba around him asked “Do you cry?” He replied “This is a sign of mercy… Indeed the eyes cry when the heart is very sad…but we only say that Allah is pleased with” (Bukhari, Vol 3, Hadeeth# 1303)
