36. Fanaa or Nirvana – The Union of Man With God

A look at various lists of the most prominent so-called saints, reveals names like that of al-Hallaaj who claimed divinity in his infamous pronouncement “Anal-Haqq” [I am the Reality] when Allaah already said

(Quran Chapter 22. Al Hajj ayat 6)

That is so, because Allaah is the Reality and it is He who gives life to the dead, and it is He who is able to do All things.

What led this individual to make such a pronouncement was his belief in a principle very similar to the ultimate state of being in Buddhism known as “ Nirvana”[Sanskrit term meaning “blown out”]. In this state, according to a branch of Buddhist thought, the ego disappears and the human soul and consciousness are extinguished.

This concept also forms the core of a philosophy known as “mysticism”. Mysticism is defined as an experience of union with God and the belief that man’s main goal lies in the seeking that union. Plato wrote Symposium in which mention is made of various ladders of ascent. A parallel concept can also be found in Hinduism’s identification of Atman (human soul) with Brahman (the impersonal Absolute). St. Pachomius (290-346 CE) established the first set of rules for Christian monasticism and founded nine monasteries in the Egyptian desert.

A group of Muslims who didn’t like the Sharee‘ah (Islamic Law), developed a parallel system which they named the Tareeqah (the way). Just as the ultimate goal of the Hindu was unity with the world soul and of the Christian mystic union with God; the ultimate goal of this movement became Fanaa, the dissolution of the ego, and Wusool, the meeting and unification of the human soul with Allah in this life.

A series of preliminary stages and state which had to be attained were defined. They were called Maqaamaat (stations) and Haalaat (states). A system of spiritual exercises was also designed for the initiate in order to bring about this “meeting.” These exercises of Dhikr often involved head and body movements and sometimes even dance, as in the case of whirling dervishes. All of these practises were attributed to the Prophet through chains of narration in order to validate them, but there does not exist any authentic support for them in any of the classical books of Hadeeth.

A multiplicity of systems evolved, and orders, similar to those among Christian monks, appeared named after their founders, like the Qaadiri, Chishti, Nakhshabandi, and Teejaani orders. Along with that, volumes of legends and fairy tales were spun around the founders and the outstanding personalities of these orders. And, just as Christian and Hind monks chose special isolated structures (i.e. monasteries) in which to house their communities, the Sufi orders developed similar housing schemes called Zaawiyahs (lit. corners).

Thank Almighty, Now you know where the concepts and practices of Tareeqa came from. The bottom-line is tareeqas have nothing to do with the Islam the Prophet taught. The unislamic practices don’t become Islamic just because they wear a cap or have a beard. BTW, orthodox Jews have longer beards and wear caps all the time.

23. Shirk in ‘Ibaadah

Shirk in al-‘Ebaadah: Acts of worship are directed to other than God, and the reward for worship is sought from the creation instead of the Creator

1. Ash-Shirk al-Akbar (Major Shirk): Any act or worship is directed to other than Allaah. Examples: Idolatry, following the lusts/desires [loving things/people more than that of Allah], prostration to people or things.

(Quran Chapter 16. An Nahl verse 36)

Surely, we have sent among Every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): “Worship Allaah (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Taaghoot (all false deities, etc. i.e. do not Worship Taaghoot besides Allaah)”…

If a man allows the love of anything or anyone to come between himself and Allaah, then he has worshipped that thing, In this way, money can become one’s god or even one’s desires could become a god.

The Prophet (PBUH) said, “ The worshipper of the dirham [i.e. Money] will always be miserable” [Sahih Bukhari]

(Quran Chapter 25. Furqaan verse 43)

Have You seen him who has taken as his Ilaah (God) his own desire?

2. Ash-Shirk al-Asghar (Minor Shirk): ar-Riya (showing off). Hidden shirk destroys the value/reward of that act. Check out your intentions before, while doing and after doing any deed.

Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said: The thing I fear for you the most is ash-shirk alasghar (minor shirk). The companions asked O Messenger of Allaah, what is minor shirk? He replied, ‘Ar-Riyaa’ (showing off), for verily Allaah will say on the Day of Resurrection when people are receiving their rewards, “Go to those for whom you were showing off in the material world and see if you can find any reward from them” [Ahmad, at-Tabaraanee and al-Bayhaqee in az-Zuhd]

This is not about dressing nicely, or reciting Quran with Tajweed, or prolonging your prayers etc. This is about your intention – Are you doing it for Allaah, or are you hoping that people will notice you? On the other hand, you MUST NOT stop doing a good deed just because people are noticing you, or praising you. If you become a scholar, people will appreciate that. That doesn’t mean, you should not learn things. But, don’t learn things expecting appreciation.

22. Shirk in al-Asmaa was-Sifaat

Shirk in this category includes both the common pagan practice of giving Allaah the attributes of His creation as well as the act of giving created beings Allaah’s names and attributes

1. Shirk by Humanization: Allah is given the qualities/attribute of human or animal. Picture of God as an old European man, reaching out to Adam, spark of light…picture by Michelangelo. Hindus and Buddhists worship countless idols in the likeness of Asian men and consider them manifestations of God in creation

2. Shirk by Deification: Attributes of Allah are given to His creations. For example, Shiites believe their Imams have the attributes of Infallibility, omnipotence and omniscience [while these can only be attributed to Allah]. For details, Please see Ismaai‘ils, also known as Agha Khanis, consider their leader, the Agha Khan, to be God incarnate.

Claims of Sufis like al-Hallaaj that they have become one with God and as such exist as manifestations of the Creator within His creation may also be included in this aspect of Shirk in al-Asmaa was-Sifaat

21. Shirk in Ruboobiyyah

Shirk can manifest in each of the three categories of Tawheed: Ruboobiyah, Asmaa was-Sifaat & Uloohiyya (‘Ibaadah)

Two Sub-types of Shirk in Ruboobiyah

This category of shirk refers to either the belief that others share Allaah’s lordship over creation as His equal or near equal, or to the belief that there exists no lord over creation at all

1. Shirk by Association: Beliefs that exemplify shirk by association are ones in which a main God or Supreme Being over creation is recognized, though His dominion is shared by other lesser gods, spirits, mortals, heavenly bodies or earthly objects


  • Trinity in Christianity (Jesus judges the world, and Holy Spirit helps & guides Christians)
  • Trinity in Hinduism (Brahma: Creator, Shiva: Destroyer and Vishnu: Preserver)

Pantheism: Pantheism (Greek: pan = all and theos = God), is the view that everything is part of an all-encompassing immanent God. 20. Definition of Shirk

Shirk (Literal) → Sharing, partnership or associating

Shirk (Technical) → Act of assigning partners to Allah in any form

Why should we learn Shirk?

  1. Negating what is false (Shirk) and affirming what is true (Tawheed) are both important
  2. Knowledge of shirk is vital to implement Tawheed. Subtle forms of shirk can strip down Tawheed
  3. Allah will NOT forgive Shirk

(Quran Chapter 4. An Nisaa’ ayat 48)

Verily, Allaah forgives not that partners should be set up with Him In worship, but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He pleases, and whoever sets up partners with Allaah In worship, He has indeed invented a tremendous sin.

Shirk destroys the Tawheed.
